Why spiritual direction?

Many voices clamor for our constant attention these days. In the midst of busy lives, we often miss God’s gentle voice of love. An increasing number of Christians are discovering the historic practice of spiritual direction to be a gift for the soul in a noisy world.

What do you desire?

Perhaps one of these resonates with you.

It helps to reflect and talk about my spiritual life, but I need a safe place and person with whom to talk and pray.

Others talk about hearing God’s voice but that is not my experience. I would like to hear God speak to me.

It’s embarrassing to admit, but at times my prayers and relationship with God are dry. What should I do?

I know a lot about God, but most of the time I’m not aware of God. I want to know God in a deeper way.

There are a lot of changes going on in my life, and I just don’t know where God is in all of this. I am not sure what God is calling me to do. I need discernment and guidance.

I never hear others mention the things I am experiencing in my spiritual life. I feel different.

God delights in the seeking and stands ready to meet you right where you are.

I’m sporadic in spiritual disciplines, even though I understand how helpful they are. I need accountability.

I used to have a close relationship with God. But now God seems to have disappeared. I want to feel close again, but don’t know how.

I’m not sure what the next steps are to my spiritual growth. In some ways I feel stuck.

What can I expect in a session?

We begin by opening ourselves to the guidance of the real director, the Holy Spirit. As you share whatever is on your heart, I listen to your sacred story and how God is intertwined within it. My goal is to help you discern what God is saying to you through questions and observations. We always close our time together in prayer.

Sessions last about one hour. Typically meeting once per month, we build on each session towards a deeper understanding of your spiritual journey and growth towards a deepened walk with God. Rest assured that our sessions are completely confidential. You are in a safe space.

In-person, socially distanced meetings are preferred, but virtual or phone sessions are also an option. Your safety and comfort are our first priority.

How is spiritual direction different from therapy?

Spiritual direction is like having another set of spiritual eyes and ears. Spiritual direction differs from therapy in that therapy is often problem-focused.

A spiritual director’s focus is on how God is active in that person’s life. Rather than give answers or advice, the focus is on facilitating a client’s growth in their walk with God.
